NeuroKnitting is the result of collaborations between scientists and artists. By measuring relaxation, excitement, and cognitive load, each aspect is translated into a knitting pattern and actualized into a wearable garment. The creators outline their process below:

“This project is a collaboration between artist-duo Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet and MTG researcher Sebastian Mealla. Sebastian Mealla is a PhD candidate whose research focuses on the possible uses of brain and body signals for multimodal interaction. Sebastian Mealla has brought his expertise on physiological computing to this project. Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet are the developers a open hardware knitting machine Knitic allowing creative use of digital knitting technology.

The knitted garments picture the listener’s affective and cognitive states during the experiment. It is a way of making tangible the implicit the states of users and visualizing them in an original way as a large and personal data footprint.

Neuro Knitting represents a novel way of personal, generative design and fabrication. An approach that brings together affective computing and digital crafts. And thus, it offers new applications and creative thinking to both areas.

Together they had brainstorm this art project to demonstrate art and science collaboration.”

About the Author

Alex Pedersen

Alex is a critical scholar and social scientist. During her degrees, Alex recognized a dearth of knowledge transfer between the academy and the general public. To address this gap, she extends her empirical research through multiple mediums including: publications, formal lectures, public speaking events, radio, theatre and photography. In diversifying access to her research, Alex honed a unique set of skills to plan, design and produce events for a wide variety of audiences. To date, she was responsible for several successful lecture series, community events and fundraisers across diverse settings. Most notably, Alex organized and implemented the 2015 Chancellor Dunning Trust Lectureship and was an advisor for the “Free Queen’s” Steering Committee (an initiative encouraging graduates to bring their work to the wider public). In addition, she has written numerous successful grant applications. An activist at heart, Alex advocates for critical thinking in and beyond academic institutions.
